Asia Pacific Bowls Championship

Teams - New Zealand
New Zealand has no intention of relinquishing their Asia Pacific Championship lightly. Bowls New Zealand last month announced a powerful women's team to contest the Championships after settling on their men's combination in August. All five selected women won medals at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, including gold for the pairs combination of Sharon Sims and Jo Edwards. Marlene Castle retains the singles slot in which she won a bronze in Manchester. Both Castle in singles and the Sims/Edwards pair are also the defending Asia Pacific champions. The five-woman team is completed by Wendy Jensen and Jan Khan, Commonwealth Games bronze medalists from the fours discipline. Two years ago at Moama, New Zealand enjoyed a superb Asia Pacific event, winning a medal in all eight disciplines, three gold, three silver and two bronze. Not surprisingly the team also brought home both men's and women's team trophies. In the men's, Russell Meyer will play singles for the Kiwis and will team with Paul Girdler in the pairs. Meyer and Girdler are no strangers to this part of the world, recently narrowly missing out on their third consecutive Kingscliff Classic Pairs. They are also the defending Asia Pacific champions. Other players in the NZ team are Jamie Hill, Sean Johnson and Gary Lawson. Queensland Bowler |
