About the Asia Pacific Bowls Championships
The Asia Pacific Bowls Championships were inaugurated in 1985 when Tweed Heads Bowling Club in New South Wales, Australia hosted the event. Subsequently it has been held every second year and was played in Papua New Guinea in 1987, Fiji in 1989,
Hong Kong China in 1991, Canada in 1993, New Zealand in 1995, Australia in 1997, Kuala Lumpur in 1999, Australia in 2001 and
was held at the Pine Rivers Memorial Bowls Club, Queensland, Australia in 2003.
The growth of the sport in the Pacific Rim is reflected in the increased number of nations participating. Nine took part in the initial event at Tweed Heads and
sixteen at Moama in 2001.
In 2003, separate men's and women's events were held in all four disciplines of
singles, pairs, triples and fours. Ten bowlers, five men and five women, and two Managers
represented each country. Participating countries were divided into four sections in all four disciplines (based on their finishing positions from the last Asia Pacific Championships) and a round robin format of matches
was adopted. Medal positions were determined by quarter-finals,
semi-finals and finals matches.
